Is YouTube A Good Web 2.0 Application?

YouTube is a Web 2.0 application which you can use for free on your computer, tablet, ipad and mobile phone. It is an application which allows you to watch and share videos with users around the world. YouTube is a Web 2.0 application which I use every day and I would say it is my favourite application. This is because I like learning through watching videos.

Advantages

There are many advantages of using YouTube. You can click on categories on YouTube to find videos which suit your personality. For example, you can click on the most popular page to see which videos are trending. Additionally there are pages for comedy, entertainment and gaming etc. which only show you videos from those categories. You can also watch videos in high definition.

You do not need to make a separate account for YouTube if you already have a Google account. You need an account to subscribe to channels and to like/dislike videos. One of the advantages of creating an account is that you can save videos to watch later and you can also upload your own videos to YouTube. The information on your account is safe and secure. It is also cost effective as you do not need to pay a fee to create an account.

Additionally, every YouTube video has a viewers count; in my opinion this is very useful as if you are searching for let's say a video on what Web 2.0 is, you can choose to view the video with the highest view count. You then know that this video is good as many other people have viewed it. It saves you a lot of time as you do not need to search through all the videos wondering which one is good.

Furthermore, there is a like and dislike button for every video. So if you like the video you are watching you can choose to like it. This also helps for searching for good videos easily.

You can also subscribe to a channel which you like. This is convenient as you can easily watch all videos from the channel as it is saved to your account. You can also create playlists of your favourite videos.

This Web 2.0 application is great for children in schools as they can make a class account and share videos of their work with their fellow classmates. For example, if the project is to make a video using pictures of how different landmarks are made, then pupils can share their work easily through YouTube. They can also access it at a later date if needed and watch the video in their own time, as many times as necessary.

Disadvantages

One of the major disadvantages of YouTube in my opinion is the comment section at the bottom of videos. Comments which users make can be unpleasant and hurtful. Although you can report unpleasant comments, it can be time consuming to do so.

There should also be more parental control in order to block inappropriate videos, making it safer for children to use and access.

Another disadvantage of YouTube is that there are sometimes adverts at the start of the video which you want to watch. This can be frustrating if you are in a rush and wish to watch a video quickly.
